At our clinic, we do not perform joint corrections or replacements. No cracking or sudden movement.
We practice functional and cranial osteopathy.
MY PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
The approach to manual sensation, before the therapeutic aspect, is aimed and imposed by its efficiency and speed in the evaluation of most functional disorders.
It is there, the manual feeling, of a diagnostic approach that must be of the very first line in the evaluation of a health problem ... and certainly not packed or neglected to the benefit only of examinations and tests.
For me, therefore, and in summary, osteopathy is the assessment of the person and his / her medical condition, the history, the manual and medical tests available in order to understand the dynamics involved.
Secondly explain the patient well, in order to make him an enlightened partner and help in the recovery of his health.
Thirdly apply the required logical and caregiving treatments so that the body can move towards sustainable health.
The assessment ...
Although I have the greatest respect for those who seek (and practice) a more sensory and "energetic" osteopathy, I must say that I feel more comfortable with a medical approach:
sensing, feeling , manually, sensorially, attentively ... yes,
-Then use this feeling and the anamnesis to understand logically and rationally the different possibilities of pathologies (because there are always at least some)
-Test ... and here I use standard and standardized tests (Murphy maneuvers, Jobe test, Palm-up, Mcmurray, Apley, evaluation and angular measurement of the articular mobility, etc ...), tests of functional medicine (Koenisburg , Salkowitch, and the various tests already carried out with which patients often arrive
-The goal is to understand the problem and then to draw up a treatment plan that will always include a lot of detailed explanations so that the patient understands the dynamics involved in the development of his pathology and that he can, by understanding better, to become useful and effective to recover his health.
To make our patient, already our main source of information, a motivated partner and able to deduce what to do and what to avoid in order to help ... and help us to help!
For this reason there will generally be exercises, changes in lifestyle, sleep, food, attitudes, if such changes are relevant.
Subsequently, depending on the assessment and treatment plan established, we perform osteopathic treatments on a weekly basis or by following any other relevant frequency.
A frequent pattern of consultation for back pain:
- the person leaning on a keyboard, at the computer, a large part of the day, several hours in a row, day after day.
The muscles of the back, between the shoulder blades (long dorsal ...) and the neck (scalene, angular, splenius ...) are in tension. Now no muscle is designed to remain in continual tension, except may be the great abdominal right.
Then these muscles will suffer a lack of blood and ignite. This will be perceived at first as a tension in the neck or back, especially in the evening. Tiredness.
Each day these muscles will be a little more solicited, and prolonged.
There will then occur, gradually, insidiously, a kind of fibrosis, rigidity of the muscles involved. They lose their elasticity. Any prolonged tension of these muscles now produces and quickly pain. They are hurting faster and faster.
The chest grille moves less and less, reflects. The person breathes from the stomach because there is less mobility of the chest. (Any intense sportsman will tell you that the lungs are in the chest ... not in the belly!).
A massage, a cream, a hot shower, all this will help ... momentarily!
But the next day ... starting point, we start again: same prolonged position, same pain.
In these cases, and in order for it to be effective and lasting, it will be necessary to treat with techniques intended to break the adhesions in the muscles to restore their initial elasticity.
It is not a massage, far from it. In this case, the muscles are worked in tension, to stretch them.
The chest grill will be mobilized during assisted breathing exercises to bring it straight as much as possible, decrease its curvature and restore its mobility, thus decreasing its anteflexion.
Obviously the work positions will have to be evaluated and modified as necessary.
Often, for a few weeks, the treatment time, the person will have to work sequentially. That is to say to be the computer (or to his dentist's chair, or hairdresser's chair ... or his bike ...) in periods of 5 or 7 minutes and then stop for 30 seconds to one minute, in order to allow the muscles to irrigate and evacuate the waste that burns them, then resume work for another 5 or 7 minutes, stop again ... so on. All this for a while ... obviously.
-We work efficiently the ATM, or the temporal-mandibular joint (articulation of the jaw). People grind their teeth, too much. The joint is damaged. Headaches, cervicalgia ... The treatments of this joint are effective, and the exercises to stop tightening teeth too!
-The headaches, there are 13 kinds and the symptomatological table informs us, most of the time, about the cause. Except for a few causes, we can help so many people with headaches.
- Shoulders, tendonitis, bursitis, capsulitis, etc. all too often result in a loss of mobility of the shoulder to which people get accustomed. It will be necessary to work firstly to regain part of this lost mobility before a greater amplitude of movement is possible ... and this without relaunching the pain.
- The epicondylitis (elbow pain), which are in fact tendinitis of muscles of the forearm,
- Knee pain ... often a problem of lift of the feet, or mobility of the hips ... You would be surprised of the improvement when the cause is identified and the treatment is well targeted.
Lower back pain, commonly referred to as a "kidney tower", which has nothing to do with the kidneys but which indicates too much tension in the lumbar muscles, which then ignite. There are also tendinitis ...
When this tension repeats and becomes rigid, then the person discovers fragile. Forcing a little, leaning a little, or a little too long, a bad sleeping position or an additional tiredness and lumbar pain freezes the back.
Nothing is moved away. It is not a false movement ... there is no false movement! There are no real or false movements. Watch moving a cat or a monkey!
"There are only muscles too tense, often without our knowledge, and partly tearing, sometimes in an innocuous movement" (John Sarno, MD, rheumatologist).
A good therapeutic approach will aim to stretch and restore their original flexibility.
-Often we will have to check and adjust the lift of the feet, for example, on prone, hollow or flat feet, or the mobility of the hips.
